With input from leaders across campus, UNCG Learning and Development is offering a series of workshops intended for supervisors of EHRA Non-Faculty and SHRA employees. The certificate program consists of ten (10) 2-hour workshops held weekly over a 10-week period. Make up classes will be available, but it is recommended that you attend all ten classes consecutively.

Kickoff! Understanding the Supervisor Role


In the kickoff we will cover the specifics of the supervisor’s role and responsibilities, including serving as coach, mentor, representative for management, and employee advocate. Learn what each of the below sessions will offer you as you seek to improve your skill sets as a supervisor.

The Art of Effective Communication


Great supervisors recognize that there is a benefit and power in the ability to communicate effectively inside the workplace. After this workshop, you can expect to:

  1. Improve understanding of the interpersonal communication process and its role in the development of relationships.
  2. Increase awareness of factors that influence the transmission an interpretation of information.
  3. Increase knowledge, skills and abilities for using adaptive communication attitudes, observational skills and expression skills necessary for making communication choices in interactions with others.

Driving High Performance Teams


Building and maintaining teamwork is a challenging process. Overcoming the obstacles associated with building high performing teams can be difficult. This workshop will allow you to:

  1. Establish a high level of trust and respect.
  2. Gain a commitment to a clear and common purpose.
  3. Build the willingness and ability to manage conflict.
  4. Maintain a focus on results.
  5. Create an alignment of authority and accountability.

Negotiating and Influencing


Negotiation is the process we use when achieving our objectives requires cooperation from others. The most skillful negotiate to achieve their desired results without compromising their integrity or relationships. In this workshop, we will introduce you to the main principles of effective negotiation and help you develop the skills needed to maximize your outcomes and maintain your good reputation.

  2. Identify the various stages of the negotiation process.
  3. Recognize the importance of planning.
  4. See how to influence turning conflict and even hostility into win-win solutions.
  5. Apply learning to common workplace situations.

Art and Science of Managing Projects


Leading project teams is an integral component in a supervisory role. This workshop introduces you to the principles of successful project management and shows you how to motivate any team to gain maximum productivity. You’ll learn how to:

  1. Organize, estimate, and schedule projects efficiently and effectively.
  2. Discover how to manage deliverables, issue changes, assess risks, maintain communications.
  3. Avoid common problems that can impede even the best project managers.

Managing Performance with SMARTER Goals


Creating individual goals, using S.M.A.R.T. goals, goals that are specific, meaningful, achievable, relevant, and time-bound, is important. S.M.A.R.T.E.R. goal setting takes this process two steps further, forcing you to set expectations and allocate resources, adjusting your approach.

  1. Write goals that emphasize the goal itself, the key deliverables, and what “exceeding expectations” looks like.
  2. Help you and the employee focus on what is needed to achieve these goals.
  3. Align goals with the overall mission and goals of the University and department.
  4. Map your career goals with future roles and responsibilities.

Addressing Performance Issues


When it becomes clear that an employee’s ability to be efficient or effective is compromised, it is the supervisor’s responsibility to immediately address the situation. This workshop will address:

  1. Understanding when to coach versus counsel.
  2. Defining prerequisites for resolving performance issues.
  3. Demonstrating informal methods for resolving performance issues.
  4. Understanding the Performance Improvement Plan (PIP).
  5. Applying appropriate consequences for unsatisfactory performance.

Leading Change


This workshop is designed for supervisors to gain a comprehensive understanding of the challenges of Change Management, why change happens, how it happens and what needs to be done to overcome resistance to change on the individual, team and leadership levels.

  1. Identify factors affect people’s response to change.
  2. Understand how teams change and develop.
  3. Know how team change impacts organizational change.
  4. Understand the relationship between leadership style and change.
  5. Learn different leadership roles in the change process.
  6. Develop a personal action plan to respond to the demands of leading change.

Employment Law for Non-Attorneys


As a supervisor, you’re making decisions and carrying out your personnel duties in what can be a legal minefield. With a rapidly growing body of government regulations to keep track of, expensive legal consequences are possible at every step, whether you’re hiring, firing, disciplining, promoting, considering requests for leave or dealing with any of dozens of other employee issues.

Employment laws simply aren’t a place where you can afford to take a trial-and-error, learn-as-you-go approach. The risks are just too high. In this course we will plain English explanations of key employment laws to help you make personnel decisions that fall within the law.

Demystifying Human Resources Policies


For many people, UNCG, GA, and state policies remain a mystery. This workshop gives you the opportunity to practice applying the TOP TEN policies that will most likely affect how you support your team, including Grievance Policy, Disciplinary Action Policy, and the differences between SHRA, EHRA, and SAAO employees. Understand how workplace policies affect your job as a supervisor and the special situations that may arise.

Fundamentals of Budget Management


Each day supervisors make decisions that affect their department or division’s financial performance, whether it is scheduling operations, overseeing travel reimbursements or preparing a budget. This workshop will give you the basic fiscal management skills to help you understand the financial implications of the decisions that impact your budgeting operations.
