About UNCG
Welcome to UNCG!
UNC Greensboro opened its doors as a college for women on Oct. 5, 1892, with 198 students, 15 faculty members, and three academic departments: commercial, domestic science, and
pedagogy. In 1932, it became one of the original three institutions to form the UNC System. An era of expansion began in 1964 when men were welcomed to the student body. Now, UNCG is a growing high-research, community-engaged, doctoral university, as classified by the Carnegie Foundation, with almost $68 million in external funding annually and noted
strengths in health and wellness, visual and performing arts, nursing, and education.
Comprised of nearly 18,000 students and over 2,800 faculty and staff members representing more than 90 nationalities, UNCG is one of the most diverse universities in the state. UNCG
has been honored as a military-friendly institution and recognized as a minority-serving university – 53% of students are people of color.
