University Policies

UNCG maintains a number of policies that are designed to enhance organizational agility, minimize risk, and set behavioral expectations. Policies developed and maintained by UNCG are overseen by various organizational authorities and reviewed by the Policy Advisory Group. Additional policies that impact the university may be developed and administered by a number of authorities including UNC General Administration and the Office of State Human Resources. Employees governed by these policies include SHRA (SPA), EHRA (EPA) Non-faculty, and EHRA (EPA) Faculty.

Explanation of Employee Classification Types

SHRA (SPA)

Employees holding positions that are subject to the State Personnel Act. The State Personnel Manual governs the policies and procedures applicable to these positions. Many SHRA (SPA) employees hold positions that are subject to the Fair Labor Standards Act (“FLSA”) governing overtime compensation, but not all. Some SHRA (SPA) employees hold positions that are exempt from the FLSA and do not qualify for compensation or leave for hours in excess of 40 hours worked in a workweek.

EHRA (EPA)

Employees holding positions that are not subject to the State Personnel Act, including faculty, senior academic and administrative officers and employees referred to as “instructional & research” who engage in activities such as instruction, research, public service, academic support, student services, student health service physicians, institutional support and library. These positions are authorized and governed by the Code and the regulations in the UNC Policy Manual. Many EHRA (EPA) employees hold positions that are exempt from the FLSA overtime provisions but not all. An EHRA (EPA) employee may hold a position that is subject to FLSA.

Human Resources Policies

Human Resources are responsible for the administration of a number of employment policies that impact SHRA (SPA), EHRA (EPA) Non-faculty, EHRA (EPA) Faculty employees, and Student Employees. Also, many policies in the HR Policy are administered by either UNC General Administration and the Office of State Human Resources.

UNCG Policy Manual

Policies that have been approved by the UNCG Chancellor or UNCG Board of Trustees are listed in the University Policy Manual. The only exceptions are Human Relations/Personnel policies that are listed on the Academic Affairs web page and the Human Resources web page. In rare cases, e.g., “Weapons on Campus,” the University Policy Manual may list a state law.
